In the latest issue of PlayStation Official Magazine UK, they confirm that Uncharted: A Thief’s End will have sandbox elements and they compare its level of openness to that of Jak 3, a previous Naughty Dog game.

While we can’t go expecting a level of openness to that of GTA V, perhaps it will work in a similar way to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which grants you the ability of approaching a mission on a large map and how you go about your mission, is all down to you.  It also says in the official PlayStation mag that “there will be the opportunity to explore the maps and find small extra information about the plot”.

Other huge details were revealed in the magazine that includes Nathan Drake having a grappling hook to help him climb obstacles and presumably even use as a weapon!  Details as to who the enemies of Nathan Drake will be are also mentioned, one of whom is the leader of a South African mercs squad going by the name of Nadine Ross.  Not much is known about her at this time, but we do know that she works for the treasure hunter Rafe Adler, who is said to have “major beef” with Nathan Drake and his brother Sam, played by Troy Baker.  Sam died 15 years ago, or so Nathan was led to believe, yet Uncharted 4 takes place “3 to 4 years after Uncharted 3.”  It is said that Nathan and Sam are “chasing the mythical pirate colony of Libertatia/Libertalia.

Uncharted 4’s cutscenes are also rendered in real time, which should make for the transition between cutscenes and gameplay pretty much seamless.  And Uncharted 4’s texture resolution is said to be “quadruple that of its predecessor (Uncharted 3)”.  While the demo available to the editors at OPMUK ran at 30fps, it is the goal of Naughty Dog to achieve 60fps by the time the game is released, without sacrificing the quality of gameplay.  If anyone is capable of doing so, I have faith that the talented developers at Naughty Dog will achieve the utmost highest of standards for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

You can read up on even more details from PlayStation Official Magazine UK, by picking up their issue #107.  Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will release for the PS4 at the end of this year.
