PlayStation 5 Announced for 2020, Impressive New DualShock Features Revealed

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 5 will in-fact be called; wait for it, the PlayStation 5.  While that was of course stating the obvious, they have also confirmed that the PS5 will release during the Christmas period of 2020, so we better get saving up!

While not much was revealed in terms of the console itself on the PlayStation Blog, they did speak of the impressive new features of the PS5 controller, presumably called the DualShock 5.  In particular it will have next level features, in two parts with what is called haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

The haptic feedback is next level rumble technology that is said to have us “truly feel a broader range of feedback” as such as when exploring terrain, crashing a car or “making a tackle on the football field.”  The blog post even boasts of experiencing a variety of textures “when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud.”

The haptic feedback will be combined with the adaptive L2/R2triggers which allows developers to program the level of resistance of the triggers, for example when “drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain.”  It all sounds very impressive and reminiscent of a pro controller, but of course we won’t know how much more it will immerse us into the gaming experience, without actually experiencing it first-hand.

The blog post then finished off with reminding us that there’s still plenty of life in the PS4 yet with the likes of Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima on the way.  But will these games be cross-gen titles?  Probably.

Further details were revealed in an exclusive article with Wired.com that revealed the PS5 will have a CPU based upon AMD’s Ryzen line and it will have a GPU based on the Navi product range, which will also support ray-tracing, all much like the next-gen Xbox console.  The PS5 will also have a 4K blu-ray player, so you can watch your 4K movies, something that the PS4 Pro did not feature, despite being a 4K supported console.  Game discs will also use 100gb optical disks, so I hope that the PS5 will ship with a sizable hard drive to accommodate and the controllers will also be USB Type-C.  You can read the Wired article in-depth via the link below.
