One of the most important things when building a successful business is that you follow a formula and repeat it. Ubisoft intend to replicate the success of its Montreal studio by investing $507m in its Toronto studio whilst also adding 800 jobs across the next 10 years, according to a report in Canadian newspaper Financial Post .

Ubisoft’s Toronto studio was founded in 2009 and supports 210 programmers and designers, but the headcount is expected to break  the 1000 barrier by 2022. Ubisoft moved some of their experienced developers from its Paris base to the studio in Montreal, using experienced veterans such as managing director Jade Raymond to lead operations.

Currently Ubisoft Toronto is working on the latest Splinter Cell game, which will be their first project, and is rumored to be titled Retribution but there aren’t many details. The following is a quote from the Ubisoft Montreal CEO.

“We are, in a way, applying the same recipe,” said Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat. “We’ve been sending over experienced, senior people from Ubisoft Montreal as a guarantee that they immediately get traction and speed and knowledge in place so that they can recruit the best people. You can’t hope to have a studio up and running in one year by just hiring junior people.”

To aid this half billion dollars of investment the Ontario government are supporting them in the form of CA$263 million ($266 million USD) spread across the next 10 years. The government clearly supports the growth of Ubisoft which directly aims to create many more well paid jobs, making it a worthwhile investment.

There are no real details about the latest Splinter Cell game but as the studio looks to replicate its successes elsewhere, hopefully the newest Splinter Cell addition can also do the same.
