Finally, the next expansion for Destiny was officially revealed via a Bungie Twitch stream and with it came the Rise of Iron trailer, new details on the expansion (or old if you’ve already read the leaked details) and the return of the legendary Gjallarhorn…. praise thee!

First things first, Rise of Iron will release on September 20th for PS4 and Xbox One, but it will be missing the PS3 and Xbox 360.  During the reveal, they said Rise of Iron will £24.99/$29.99.  To play Rise of Iron you must own the base game (obviously) and The Taken King (which includes The Dark Below and House of Wolves).  If you got rid of Destiny a while ago, if you shop about, you should be able to pick up Destiny: The Taken King for around £20-£25.

In terms of the Gjallarhorn, there were concerns that with it being made a pre-order incentive, it would result in some kind of “pay to win” formula, which wouldn’t have gone down well with the community.  However, they did reveal during the stream that everyone who owns Rise of Iron will have access to the Gjallarhorn via an in-game guest, whether you have pre-ordered the expansion or not.

The pre-order incentive is a black skin for Gjallarhorn called the Iron Gjallarhorn and it will have the same statistics as the original skinned legendary rocket launcher, it will simply be a different colour.  Personally, I prefer the look of the original, but that’s just me.

You can find an image of the Iron Gjallarhorn below with its specifications (which will also represent the original skinned Ghally), along with the pre-order trailer.

Now let’s get on to the details of the star of the show, the Rise of Iron expansion itself.  Located on the Cosmodrome aka Earth, the expansion will feature three Antarctic-like locations called The Plaguelands, Felwinter Peak and The Wall (which is on the border of Old Russia).  The main enemy type will be a plague-ridden robotic mutated form of the Fallen who “scavenge the tombs of the Golden Age.

The story will based upon the adventures of Mr Iron Banner himself, Lord Saladin and the fate of the Iron Lords is in his (or your) hands.  You will be able to acquire updated versions of original Iron Banner weaponry and we’ll also learn of the origins of the namesake, from the Guardians they’re named after.  Oh and they’ll be no Wolf companions (boo).

Below is a summary of what we know at this time regarding Rise of Iron, with more details set to arrive via E3 this coming weekend and throughout the summer.

  • New Story Campaign, with cinematics & Quests Lines
  • New 6 player Raid
  • New Weapons
  • New Armour and Gear
  • Maximum Light Increase (increased number will be revealed at a later date)
  • New and updated Strikes
  • New Crucible Mode, Maps and features
  • Patrols and Public Events
  • New Plaguelands Zone & Social Space

Rise of Iron will release September 20th for PS4 and Xbox One.
