During a revealing interview with Wired, famed developer and lead architect on the PlayStation 4, Mark Cerny revealed some very juicy details on the PlayStation 5.  Cerny is now the lead system architect for the PS5, so there’s no better source of information for Sony’s forthcoming, next-gen console.

Cerny revealed that the PS5 will support PS4 backwards compatibility, it will support up-to 8K resolution, has a beast of a CPU and AMD, it can drastically reduce load-times with its new SSD hard drive and much more.  I could bore you and myself by going through every minor detail, but for the benefit of this article, I’ll highlight some of the details from Mark Cerny’s interview with Wired.

The Highlights Include:

  • The PS5 won’t release in 2019.
  • It will be able to support 8K resolution.
  • Dev kits are already in the hands of some developers to work on next-gen titles.
  • Its CPU is a third generation AMD Ryzen and features eight cores of AMD’s new 7nm Zen 2 micro-architecture.
  • The GPU which is of the Radeon Navi line, will support ray tracing, which enhances complex interactions for techniques that models the travel of light in 3D environments.
  • The AMD chip will also support 3D audio, which Cerny believes it will “redefine what sound can do in a videogame”. This will essentially enhance sound coming from your game from above, behind and from the side.  It will support TV speakers, visual surround sound and a quality headphone.
  • Cerny says that the current PSVR will be compatible with the PS5. Though it wouldn’t surprise me if we’ll see an improved model for the next gen console.
  • The PS5 will support an enhanced SSD hard drive, which will drastically improve the load-times of the console. Cerny used PS4 exclusive, Marvel’s Spider-Man running on the PS4 Pro as an example.  He said that load-times can take up-to 15 seconds on the PS4 Pro, but can be as little as 0.8 seconds on the PS5.
  • The Marvel’s Spider-Man being used as an example of the PS5 load-time capabilities is a good indication that the PS5 will support PS4 backwards compatibility, but Cerny elaborated further. He stated that the PS5 architecture is based “in-part” on the PS4 and the PS5 will be PS4 backwards compatible.
