John Carmack from id Softwares has hinted at a Quake 5 in a recent interview with Eurogamer. He goes on to say that “Nothing is scheduled here, people are not building this,” Carmack said. However even though it’s not in the development stages, Carmack also says that Quake 5 could be going back to the series’ roots, ”

We went from the Quake 2 and the Quake 4 Strogg universe. We are at least tossing around the possibilities of going back to the bizarre, mixed up Cthulhu-ish Quake 1 world and rebooting that direction. We think that would be a more interesting direction than doing more Strogg stuff after Quake 4.”

Many gamers would consider Quake to be the pioneer of FPS online gaming with many following Quake to the online realm.

id CEO Todd Hollenshead has told fans of the series not to worry about the state of the franchise. ”People shouldn’t worry that we’re ever going to orphan or abandon Quake. We are huge fans of the game internally.”

id are now working on Doom 4 due to Rage being delayed again.
