Following the recent release of blockbuster FPS title Call of Duty: Black Ops hitting stores, according to a recent report from Gamasutra, industry sources claim the next Call of Duty game in the long-running war series may be focusing a futuristic spin on the franchise.

“Industry sources say Sledgehammer’s Call of Duty will be set in the future and feature, for lack of a better term, space Marines, a very big step for a franchise that has historically based itself on realism.”

The 2011 Call of Duty  project is currently under work by Sledgehammer Games who don’t really shy away from revealing this fact if you were to visit their website. The speculation led credence to recent website registrations by Activision, which included the following names: “Future Warfare,” “Advanced Warfare,” “Secret Warfare” and lastly and most intriguingly, “Space Warfare.”

It will be interesting to see in due time whether this rumor holds any truth and if a new course of direction is actually needed for the Call of Duty series. As it has been grounded in reality and current events for a few years now, it would be a bold move, but the series has potential and we may be surprised come 2011.
