While third parties drop the Wii U like flies, Ubisoft may have just gone and pulled their support too. Wiitalia is reporting that numerous GameStop branches are cancelling pre-orders for Watch_Dogs on the Wii U in Italy, corroborating with other reports earlier this week that they are no longer offering pre-orders because Ubisoft had told them the game is cancelled for Wii U platform.

CVG contacted Ubisoft for a comment, but were left with the standard “We have nothing to comment at the moment,“.

While Watch_Dogs was in no way going to “save” the Wii U, this might just be the final nail in the coffin for Nintendo and third party developers. Ubisoft has supported the Wii U since launch, releasing several titles such as the exclusive ZombiU, then they released several of their core titles such as Assassin’s Creed 3 and Assassin’s Creed 4, along with the once exclusive Rayman Legends. Loosing Ubisoft spells disaster and leaves Nintendo to keep their platform afloat with a few LEGO games and their first party content, a strategy I believe that only Nintendo could ever pull off.

It seems strange to cancel the game so close to launch, unless development was really behind with the Wii U version, surely it would be better to release the game and receive some revenue rather than nothing at all? Then again, a half finished game might bring down the game’s Metacritic score, an ever important number to developers these days.

What do you think of the delay? Were you planning on buying Watch_Dogs for the Wii U? Let us know below.
