Free Radical Design, -now known as Crytek UK- were made famous by their popular TimeSplitters series which debuted on the PS2, with follow-ups released for both the Xbox and GameCube, the last release being TimeSplitters: Future Perfect back in 2005. The games were full of over the top stylised FPS action complete with varied mini-games, objectives and comprehensive multiplayer options. In fact, a number of the early employees moved over from Rare, as the health meter and difficulty adjusting objectives certainly felt familiar.

Since then, fans have been clamouring for an oft rumoured TimeSplitters 4, but after the studio became part of Crytek in 2009, and were responsible for the multiplayer aspects of Crysis 2, hopes seems dashed, though rumours still persisted.

The story might not be over though, as according to CVG, the latest UK issue of OXM pertains to not only the existence of the title, but apparently it’s also been seen in action!

“Trusted OXM sources have claimed that they’ve seen TimeSplitters 4 running. That’s no guarantee that it’ll be released – at least one version of Star Wars: Battlefront 3 was cancelled without ever being announced – but it’s a promising sign.”
“If we do get a proper sequel, we’re likely to see the old games appear, too,”

While it’s no certain indication that we will see the title, it’s certainly positive news in some regards. Even if we don’t see a TimeSplitters 4, I’m sure a HD collection of the first three titles would be received very well.

The series still maintains popularity through its multiplayer mode, providing hugely customisable matches and some barmy competitive gameplay. Playing this over Xbox Live or PSN could an awesome experience, but only time will tell.

Here’s hoping for more news at E3….even though Crytek UK are most likely busy assiting with develeopment of Crysis 3.
