A trailer for Andre Muschietti’s Mama, a feature-length version of his 2008 short of the same name, has arrived online via Apple. And boy, does it look scary.

Two children, who become feral after being left on their own for five years in the woods following the mysterious death of their parents, bring something supernatural with them when they are adopted by their uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his partner Annabel (Lawless’ and The Tree of Life’s Academy Award nominated Jessica Chastain).

Guillermo del Toro’s executive-producer presence is certainly felt here from the creepy visuals to the eerie story (especially considering he directed Pan’s Labyrinth and produced The Orphanage, both of which follow the imaginations of children and their connection to the supernatural and fantastical).

The trailer is genuinely frightening, and looks to inject some life into the currently dying horror genre (where remakes are rife and scares are scarce).

There is no UK release date as of yet, but Mama will make its way to US screens on 18th January 2013 – yet another horror, like Texas Chainsaw 3D, that will skip the Halloween market.
