#E32018 Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Revealed, Branching Story, Male and Female Protagonists

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey was officially revealed to the world with some generous gameplay footage, as well as gameplay and plot details.  The biggest news to probably come out of this reveal is that for the first time, we have the choice of two protagonists to play as throughout the campaign.  In AC Odyssey you can play as either a man or woman with Alexios or Kassandra.

It will be interesting to see how each of the characters impact the story, especially with AC Odyssey having multiple choice dialogue when interacting with some NPC’s.  According to the official blurb, in the campaign you will “forge your destiny and define your own path” and “influence how history unfolds as you experience a rich and ever-changing world shaped by your decisions.”  While this may be a common feature for some games, it’s certainly not the case in the Assassin’s Creed series and it’s the first time we’ve had a lead female protagonist since Assassin’s Creed: Liberation in 2012.

In terms of other gameplay aspects, during the gameplay demo and presentation, we will once again be able to explore the open-seas, so hopefully this won’t be restricted to certain sections like in AC Origins.  We also saw more of an emphasis on hunting; the world looked even more vast and vibrant with dusty lands, woodland, snowy mountains, open-seas and more.  The levelling-up skill tree looked far more tidy then in AC Origins and towards the end of the trailer, we learned that we will encounter Greek Mythology beasts such as the Minotaur.

All in all, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is looking stunning and seems to play as good as Origins.  It may reuse many of the Origins assets, but the formula still should be fresh enough to warrant a second release in a consecutive year.  Though I do hope that the series doesn’t return back to a main entry release every year, as I believe a year off here and there to refresh, does the series wonders.

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey will release for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 5th.  You can also check out a batch of screenshots and concept art images below.
