With all the blockbusters that have landed this year, and all of the awards fodder still to come, it’s important not to forget that some of the finest pieces of cinema, on the whole, come from the mind of Martin McDonagh. Even with In Bruges as his only writer/director feature credit, his influence was heavily felt in one of the most overlooked films of last year, The Guard (written and directed by his brother John Michael McDonagh).

It is rare that such a limited body of work can still produce such warranted anticipation, but proven or not, Martin McDonagh’s second feature is floating around the top of most film critics’ (and fans’) ‘Most Wanted’ lists, and for good reason.

Starring no less than Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson, Abbie Cornish, Olga Kurylenko, Gabourey Sidibe, (for you Pineapple Express fans out there) Kevin Corrigan AND Tom Waits, Seven Psychopaths sees screenwriter Marty (Farrell) unwillingly entangled in a spot of mob mayhem when his kook friends (for hilarious reasons yet unknown) kidnap a gangster’s (Harrelson) beloved pet Shih Tzu. What other reason than that do you need to be excited about this film?

Seven Psychopaths is released in the UK on December 7th via Blueprint Pictures and Momentum Films.
