A new trailer for Tim Burton’s feature-length remake of his 1984 short Frankenweenie has arrived, currently available to view with Apple online. This homage to Mary Shelley’s classic novel stars Charlie Tahan as Victor Frankenstein, a young boy who brings his beloved dog Sparky back to life with the powers of science. But no matter how hard he tries to hide this miraculous secret, Sparky’s resurrection causes town-wide mayhem. It is Burton’s first film in a long time not to include regulars Johnny Depp or Helena Bonham Carter in the cast list, but includes Burton film veterans Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara and Martin Short, as well as a cameo from screen legend Christopher Lee in an homage to his many roles as Dracula.

The film looks to play on all of Burton’s strengths: stop-motion animation in the vein of Vincent and The Nightmare Before Christmas, strange gothic children’s tales (Burton himself wrote a whole book of these types of tales, known as The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy) and references to old horror cinema. After the mediocre Dark Shadows, it is great that Burton is returning to his roots and can hopefully offer up a new take on his iconic style whilst retaining character development and not forgetting that there is more to a film than just the art direction – incredible as it is.

Frankenweenie arrives in 3D in the UK on 17th October 2012, just in time for Halloween.
