Pokémon Sword and Shield Announced for Nintendo Switch, Releases This Year

Nintendo has just hosted a short, but very sweet Nintendo Direct that announced two new Pokémon games that will release for the Nintendo Switch late this year, developed by Game Freak (the series veterans since 1996).  We’ve already had Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee release, but these two new entries will be the more traditional Pokémon games that fans have been patiently waiting for.

As with any Pokémon release, we’ll get two simultaneous releases, this time with Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.  While each version will no doubt offer some different Pokémon that the other game doesn’t, these entries will be new experiences, in a new vast, explorable region called Galar, which is apparently inspired by the United Kingdom and they’ll be some brand new Pokémon to catch too, some never seen before in the series.  The Galar region will be filled with vast countryside and plains, dense cities and villages, forests  and snow filled mountain tops.

While we saw only snippets of actual gameplay and some “not actual gameplay” footage, we did get a glimpse at some of the more traditional battles and how our male or female avatar will explore the new region.  This will be a game with proper RPG elements that long standing fans will appreciate and the developers that spoke in during the Nintendo Direct, made it clear that this will be a game to welcome in new fans to the series too.

From Left to Right, Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble

When you begin your adventures in Pokémon Sword and Shield, you’ll begin by choosing one of three Pokémon to be your very first.  Grookey, a Grass Type mischievous chimp.  Scorbunny, a Fire Type bunny, full of energy.  And finally, Sobble, a Water Type, that is said to be a timid Water Lizard.

Pokémon Shied and Pokémon Sword will release exclusively for the Nintendo Switch late this year.  In the meantime, you can watch the announcement trailer for Pokémon Sword and Shield below, as well as a batch of screenshots.  Are you excited for this announcement?  Let us know across our social media channels.
