A new trailer for the fifth instalment in the Resident Evil film franchise – Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil: Retribution 3D – has been released.

The trailer opens with a rom-com like scene in which Milla Jovovich and Oded Fehr – who play Alice and Carlos Olivera in the movies – are heading a happy middle-class family, having breakfast in the kitchen. But before you can say ‘Dawn of the Dead remake’ the franchise’s Majini-like zombies are bursting into the beautiful home, attacking Fehr and forcing Jovovich to fight to protect their daughter, running into the ruined suburban street where monsters are tearing the world apart. “None of this is real”, a voice states, as the Umbrella logo flashes over the scene. “All these memories were imprinted”, Ada Wong (Li Bingbing) states. Revived baddie Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) states that he has Alice under his control, and Alice realises that she was used to perfect the virus and that everything in her life – her memories, experiences and friends – is about to be used against her. Wesker has taken over New York, Moscow and Tokyo, and Alice will have to have all her wits about her to take down Umbrella – who she claims is more powerful than ever before – but luckily is accompanied by new allies, including Resident Evil game icons Leon S. Kennedy (Johann Urb) and Barry Burton (Kevin Durand).

The trailer reveals more interesting tidbits for the upcoming film, such as a reference to Resident Evil 4 as Leon is chased by a chainsaw-wielding zombie (obviously inspired by the game’s terrifying Dr. Salvador) and a gigantic Licker chasing our heroes through Moscow. It also shows off aspects of the film that we knew were coming up, such as the Rolls Royce action chase and the inevitable fight with a Resident Evil 5-style brainwashed Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory). The film will reprise characters from the original movie, James ‘One’ Shade (Colin Salmon) and Rain Ocampo (Michelle Rodriguez). Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr) and Resident Evil: Afterlife’s Luther West (Boris Kodjoe) are also set to return. The daughter character in the rom-com style part of the trailer appears to be Becky, played by Aryana Engineer, whose relationship to Alice will apparently echo that of Ripley and Newt in James Cameron’s Aliens.

Resident Evil: Retribution 3D will release in the UK on 28th September 2012 and in the USA on 14th September 2012.
