Retro City Rampage: DX Releases on eShop February 6th NA, 14th Europe

Retro City Rampage: DX releases in North America tomorrow for $9.99 and at a later date in Europe, arriving in the 3DS eShop on February 14th across the pond. What makes the DX version different to the standard Retro City Rampage? Well, there’s a whole slew of information coming your way.

This is by no means a lazy port. Included in this DX version is:

  • Updated missions and minigames to make the most out of the 3DS.
  • Updates to controls and weapons – you can now jump and shoot at the same time, weapons have been rebalanced and more special effects have been added.
  • Arcade challenges have been slightly altered to make them much more enjoyable
  • You can now hijack weapon trucks to arm yourself, or buy your guns if you feel like a good egg.
  • Loosing the cops has now been changed, with updates to the wanted level system and police AI.
  • The minimap has been altered, displaying enemies, weapon, spray and power-up shops alongside missions and challenges. The touch capabilities are now used to select radio stations and select weapons and the entire HUD has been optimised for the 3DS system.

Don’t just take our word though, coming from the developer themselves:

“The amount of changes are in fact, too many to list. From little tweaks, to extras such as new TV Color Modes, this truly is the definitive edition.”

Sadly though, a few previously promised features have been cut, most notably the Circle Pad Pro support, a feature I was looking forward to. The developer explains:

Because RCR:DX uses the face buttons and touch screen, the right circle pad added by the CPP made reaching over to press them a bit awkward. While I mapped key face button actions to the CPP’s triggers to make them more comfortable, it just wasn’t as intuitive.

Other cut features include touch screen aiming, Full Screen mode and stereoscopic 3D, a feature that would have required a brand new engine, recreated missions, cutscenes and in general, a hell of a lot of work. Brain Provinciano noted however that future games from him may include 3D support.

We’ll do our best here at PushStartPlay to get a review up as quick as possible. I’m one of those crazy people that still haven’t got around to playing the game, so this 3DS release is a godsend for me.
