If you missed the exciting news about everyone’s favourite anthropomorphic animal with an attitude, then boy have I got news for you. Last night SEGA announced Sonic Boom, a new step in the Sonic universe which will span over video games, a TV show and even a range of toys. Oh, and all the characters have been slightly modified for this new universe.

Sonic Boom the videogame is exclusive to Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS platforms, making it the third and final game in their 3 game exclusive deal announced last year. The game will be a prequel to the TV series which will have 52 11 minute instalments. The Wii U version is going to be developed by Big Red Button Entertainment while the 3DS version is handled by Sanzaru Games, in collaboration with the Sonic Team. The video game is said to feature “exploration, combat and a new Enerbeam tether mechanic that will allow the Sonic Boom world to be discovered in totally unique ways.

Coming from SEGA’s Chief Content Officer for Sonic, he tells us that SEGA is trying to please both new and old fans of Sonic with something that feels familiar but new too: “SEGA is constantly looking to feed the appetite of Sonic fans, new and existing alike”  “The various pieces of the Sonic Boom project, such as its unique look, mix of comedy, and action and its focus on the whole ensemble with Sonic as the star, offer another exciting part of that universe for people to explore and enjoy.  It will be at once familiar but also new.

So that’s Sonic Boom. An interesting take into the Sonic Universe for sure, and the new character designs certainly are…questionable. Still, I’ll reserve judgement until I play the game first hand. Interestingly though, it appears the games won’t be making their way into Japan, as confirmed by Polygon. The Sonic Team will continue other projects alongside Sonic Boom and will most likely reveal a new project at this year’s E3.

Some interesting notes:

  • The game runs on CryEngine.
  • Less focus on speed, more on combat, but speed is still important.
  • A lot of the development team worked on Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank. Lots of Ex-Naughty Fog veterans.
  • Each character has special abilities.
  • The new main enemy is darker than Eggman.
  • It’s not open world but the levels lend themselves to exploration.
