The latest trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises has been released, and whilst Avengers Assemble has been the superhero focus of the last few weeks this new footage reminds us that in spite of a fairly quiet marketing campaign there are still so many reasons to be excited for Batman’s latest battle.

We finally see and hear Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman (portrayed by Anne Hathaway), and Bane’s (played by Tom Hardy) vocals, which have been subject to much criticism for being incoherent, seem to have been rectified. John Blake, a GCPD cop (portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), also makes an appearance. Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard), a Wayne Enterprises board member, is seen kissing Bruce Wayne (portrayed by Christian Bale), perhaps a new love interest after Rachel’s departure from The Dark Knight. Perhaps Catwoman will also play a love interest, as she does so often in the comic book adaptations?

Many of the lines presented in the trailer are so ambiguous and leave us with enough to think about. Selina Kyle describes to Bruce Wayne that “There’s a storm coming” – perhaps Wayne mistaking her for a literal storm when she means that he is in for a world of trouble? John Blake asking Kyle “Did they kill him?” as she replies solemnly “I’m not sure” – is he asking about Bane, Batman or another character? Kyle saying “You should be as afraid of him as I am.” – is she talking about Batman or Bane? Who is she talking to?

There are also many epic battle set pieces shown off in the trailer, showing that this will be a conclusion worthy of the brilliant trilogy. The new Batwing also makes an appearance at the end of the trailer, and looks like it will bring us some fantastic action sequences.

Drawing inspiration from some of Batman’s best comic books yet; Knightfall (1993), No Man’s Land (1999) and The Dark Knight Returns (1986), we can expect this to be Batman’s toughest, most epic fight of his life.

The Dark Knight Rises releases in the UK on July 20th 2012 in IMAX and in 3D.
