The first trailer for Epic has arrived, the latest CGI feature from Blue Sky – subsidiary of 20th Century Fox – the studio behind Ice Age, Rio and Robots. The film – directed by Chris Wedge – is based upon the children’s novel The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs by William Joyce. The plot allegedly differs somewhat from the book, as the insects call upon the Leaf Men to help them vanquish the sinister Spider Queen and her goblin minions. A teenage girl falls into the world and accompanies them on their adventures.

The cast includes Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls), Colin Farrell (In Bruges), Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses), Aziz Ansari (30 Minutes or Less), Johnny Knoxville (Jackass), and singers Beyoncé Knowles, Pitbull and Steven Tyler.

The visuals look stunning, the story is intriguing (reminiscent of the fairytales we grew up with) and with Danny Elfman helming the score this film is definitely one to look out for in spring next year. However, the logo at the end of the trailer looks strangely reminiscent of A Bug’s Life. Whilst Blue Sky does not hold the same caliber of work as other CGI studio greats Pixar (about to release Brave on 17th August, 2012 in the UK) and Dreamworks Animation (with Madagascar 3 currently on release in the US, out 19th October 2012 in the UK), hopefully Epic can raise the bar for the studio.

The film is due for release in the UK on 24th May, 2013.
