Ending a conference that involves the fantastic looking Far Cry 3, the majorly hyped Assassin’s Creed 3, and a new Rayman platformer wasn’t going to be easy, but somehow Ubisoft managed to pull it off with the reveal of an intriguing brand spanking new IP – Watch Dogs.

To say we know little about this game despite a background trailer and extended gameplay demo would be an understatement. From what we can gather the game revolves around the fact that society is now interconnected thanks to a computer that links every conceivable function of everyday life. From traffic lights to mobile phone signals to everything you ever do on your computer, compiling an exhaustive list of information about yourself.

It’s all got a very neo-noir cyberpunk vibe to it, with the city having a mood of shadiness and seedy underbellies, rinsed through the heavy rain, coated in the high-tech sheen of augmented reality and data control.

It’s from here we see the open world of Watch Dogs, as the character we follow – Aiden Pearce – ‘hacks’ his way into an art exhibition to meet a contact, to have to find a person, and then to escape which leads into him to hacking the traffic system to cause a crash and then gets into a gun fight and escapes in car, and even though I really have no idea what was going on in the grand scheme of things, it was all very stylish. The way Pearce could manipulate the city control computer (dubbed ctOS) to accomplish a task was a great feature, and one that could freshen up a open-world game if it’s utilised correctly, and the final product doesn’t fall back onto the shooting for the majority of the game.

The real intrigue comes from the sudden camera shift from Pearce to a second player controlled character (which is missing from the above video which instead follows Pearce for the final few moments), controlled by someone else who receives a “group objective” to protect Pearce. Whether or not this means the game is co-op (or how many people that entails) or some sort of MMO we don’t know, but you can be assured that as soon as we do know anything about this game we’ll let you know.

This is something we’ll definitely be keeping a close eye on…
