Zombie movies. They’re like a swarm in the film industry, and many of them are as mindless as the creatures that fill their stories. They often follow emotionally vapid characters running away from bad CGI/poorly made-up undead to some anticlimactic demise. Yawn, snore, blah.

We have had some diamonds in the rough in recent times, such as AMC’s The Walking Dead and Spanish indie horror [REC]. Although where the zombies themselves have really shone is in comedy, such as Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland and Fido – poking fun at horror clichés and not taking ridiculous plots too seriously. This is where the upcoming Warm Bodies has decided to settle itself, and whilst its ‘from the zombie’s perspective’ twist is nothing new (see Colin or Wasting Away) its idea of a zombie’s conscious redemption offers a fresh and original spin on the degenerating genre. Warm Bodies, based upon the Isaac Marion novel of the same name (which is a take on Romeo and Juliet), follows R (Skins’ Nicholas Hoult) who finds love in a human survivor.

The first four minutes of Warm Bodies has been revealed (via FandangoMovies), and we are introduced to R – the clip demonstrating a winning script with R’s conscious struggle in his mental deterioration as he tries to remember his name and what happened in the apocalypse, and as he tries to connect with others but is unable to do so (being dead and all).

Warm Bodies looks to be a winner; so let’s keep our fingers firmly crossed and await its release on February 8th 2013.
