Casting for CBGB, an upcoming film directed by Randall Miller about the birth of the New York punk scene, is nearing completion as a variety of stars are announced as being set to star in the movie, THR reports.

Alan Rickman (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Love Actually) has been confirmed for the role of the late club founder Hilly Kristal, who passed away in 2007. Harry Potter star Rupert Grint has been cast as The Dead Boys’ guitarist Cheetah Chrome, whilst Jonny Ramone will be portrayed by Julian Acosta, who is making the leap from TV shows such as Dirt and The Thin Red Line to the big screen. Joel David Moore (Avatar) and Stana Katic (Castle) have also been signed to the project, playing Joey Ramone and Genya Ravan respectively.

The Ramones, Blondie and The Misfits are amongst the 70’s musical legends to have been launched at the titular club. The role of Blondie front woman Debbie Harry has prompted much interest, and it was reported yesterday by ScreenCrush that the role will be filled by Malin Akerman. The Swedish-Canadian actress and model has appeared in various movies such as Watchmen and 27 Dresses.

The film, which will begin production next month in Savannah, Ga., is financed by independent backers and is due to be released in 2013.
