The Assassin’s Creed movie project has taken another promising step towards fruition, Variety reports: since scoring the immensely awesome Michael Fassbender as the star and co-producer, it has now acquired a studio in New Regency (who are currently producing the latest McQueen/Fassbender collaboration in Twelve Years a Slave, which is due out 2013) and a distributor in Fox.

Ubisoft, who will have heavy involvement in the project, hopes to have the pre-production completed by next summer. The company set up Ubisoft Motion Pictures in January 2011 in order to create films and television shows based off its popular games, such as Rabbids (based on Raving Rabbids), which will air next year. After the mediocre takings of Disney’s adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Ubisoft decided they wanted more control over their future film projects.

With Ubisoft helming the project and Michael Fassbender’s involvement, this could actually be what we’ve been waiting for – a really great movie version of a video game. The quality in that department has always been very mixed: with shockers in Super Mario Bros. and Mortal Kombat to the mediocrities of the Resident Evil adaptations and the relatively good Silent Hill movie. But there’s gold yet to be struck for the video game film adaptation, and perhaps Assassin’s Creed will be the movie to finally achieve it.

Until then, satisfy your Assassin’s Creed needs with Assassin’s Creed III, which releases October 30th in the US and October 31st in Europe (at a later date for Wii U and PC users).
