Given the success that Ubisoft saw only a couple of weeks ago when they unveiled Watch Dogs to the public, it’s not hard to see how it could turn out to be their next big thing. Coming from their Montreal team, Watch Dogs is an open-world adventure title all about technology, privacy and surveillance. Ubisoft has always been keen at pushing new IP, and given the success of the Tom Clancy and Assassin’s Creed series, what better way to spread the appeal than producing a movie as well.

The registered domains (spotted by Fusible) which may give us a hint as to what Ubisoft might be planning are Watch-Dogsthemovie.com, WatchDogsmovie.com, WatchDogsthemovie.com and Watch-Dogsmovie.com. There is of course little to go on, but it’s always fun to speculate, especially when it comes to video game movies, as their track record isn’t always very well regarded. It’s likely that they could just be grabbing the domains while they’re available, just in case it becomes their next runaway success.

Ubisoft has been known to expand their own IP’s to various entertainment formats, especially Assassin’s Creed which has seen a three-part series in Lineage, and a one off animation alongside Revelations entitled Embers, not to mention multiple graphic novels. They’re worth checking out for any fan of the series, with Embers proving to be very integral to the overarching narrative of the Ezio storyline.

Watch Dogs certainly looks cinematic, and given that the themes and concepts such as surveillance and privacy in a connected world which the game looks to explore, the title is certainly good fodder for the silver screen.

This isn’t the only Ubisoft related film news however, as the Splinter Cell movie could also be back on track. If you’re a long time fan of the series, you may have come across this back on the Chaos Theory disc.

Well, that may have been a good seven years ago, but it’s still apparently being kicked around over in Hollywood, Deadline reports.

Warner Bros. have previously been in line to produce the film, but apparently Ubisoft have now moved to discussions with Paramount (to which the original teaser trailer makes mention of), in regards to bringing Sam Fisher to the big screen. It’s been a long time coming, but like other Ubisoft franchises, it could make for a very interesting film. Previous reports of an Assassin’s Creed movie have made mention that Ubisoft require that they have full creative control over the project, an aspect which many large studios aren’t too keen on.

Hopefully Ubisoft won’t keep pushing their franchises onto the cinema screen, as I’m not sure how a H.A.W.X or End War movie would turn out. We’ll be sure to let you know if there are any developments on either of these projects.

How would you feel about Watch Dogs on the big screen? Does it make a good fit? Let us know in the comments.
