Deadline reports that Pedro Almodóvar has cast long-term muse Penélope Cruz in his new film Los amantes pasajeros – translation: The Brief Lovers (aka Standby Loversalthough interestingly ‘pasajero’ can mean ‘passing’ or ‘brief’, but also ‘passenger’ or ‘traveller’, fitting in with the film’s plot well, as the comedy depicts a fleeting encounter on an airplane. It will be the fifth collaboration between the director and the actress, having working together previously on Todo sobre mi madre (All About My Mother), Carne trémula (Live Flesh), Volver (Return) and most recently Los abrazos rotos (Broken Embraces).

Cruz joins a cast of Almodóvar veterans: Paz Vega (Hable con ella/Talk to Her), Cecelia Roth (Todo sobre mi madre, ¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto?/What Have I Done to Deserve This?), Lola Dueñas (Volver, Hable con ella) and Javier Cámara (Hable con ella, La mala educación/Bad Education).

Expect usual Almodóvar magic – brightly coloured mise-en-scène (with lashings of bright red), delicious dark comedy and some oddball characters on the fringe of society. It will be particularly nice to see the fantastic Cecelia Roth return after a decade’s absence from Almodóvar’s work, and Oscar-winner Cruz always offers a brilliant performance. Whilst the plot sounds as if it could be a little more lighthearted than some of Almodóvar’s more serious recent films such as Los abrazos rotos, or La piel que habito (The Skin I Live In), we can still expect some of the usual darker comedic scenes to slip their way into the film.

Los amantes pasajeros goes into production this summer.
