Production for the remake of Dirty Dancing has been put on indefinite hold to make more time in the schedule for casting, THR reports. The original 1987 drama-romance starred Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey and has become one of the best-loved movies of all time. Because of this, the proposed remake has always been a bone of contention for fans that doubt the ability of, or the need for, a modern remake.

The studio described the proposed remake as being

“a celebration of one of the most beloved movies of all time. Paying tribute to the emotional excitement of first love, the thrills and complexity of sexual awakening, the soul stirring power of dance, and the classic tale of teenage Baby’s forbidden romance with Johnny Castle, the remake will incorporate classic songs from the 1960s, hits from the original film and brand new compositions.”

Kenny Ortega, who was the choreographer for the original, has been attached to the movie as director, and various stars including Lea Michelle (Glee, New Years Eve), Luke Grime (Brothers & Sisters) and Derek Hough (Dancing With the Stars) have been screen tested for the film. Lionsgate announced that the delay was intended for casting purposes- it seems it might be proving difficult to find ideal actors to replace the original stars.

The film was originally planned for a July 2013 release, but this hindrance means the earliest it could now feasibly be released is 2014.
