Prepare yourselves for video game nostalgia: Wreck It Ralph’s first trailer was released yesterday, and on first impression appears to be brilliant comedic effort by Disney which will showcase a wide spectrum of characters from video games throughout the ages.  The concept looks to be a real treat for those familiar with classic video games and their characters as it references Street Fighter, Super Mario and Pac Man, amongst others.

The film focuses on ‘bad guy’ character Ralph, voiced by John C. Reilly, who lives inside the world of a classic arcade video game and gets sick of always being the villain. As a result he sets out to prove he can be a good guy by simply trying to win a medal, but ends up causing havoc when he enters a new 3D first-person shooter and accidentally releases a powerful and very evil villain upon the animated world. There begins a struggle to save the arcade before it’s ‘Game Over’ for everyone!

Although the main characters are made up just for the film, and include voices from John C. Reilly (Step Brothers, Chicago), Jack McBrayer (30 Rock), Jane Lynch (Glee) and Sarah Silverman (School of Rock, Entourage), there are also plenty of cameos from existing game characters. These include Bowser, Dr. Robotnik, Clyde (the orange ghost from Pac Man), Kano from Mortal Kombat and Zangief and M. Bison from Street Fighter.

The film is directed by Rich Moore, who was previously the animation director for The Simpsons and Futurama, and  is currently due for release in the UK in February 2013.
