The first poster and two stills for Dredd, a new superhero movie featuring the 2000 AD character Judge Dredd, has arrived, Empire reports. The new film will be much grittier than the 1995 attempt with Sylvester Stallone. It is being directed by Vantage Point director Pete Travis, and penned by The Beach author/28 Days Later screenwriter Alex Garland. DNA Studios and Lionsgate are managing the project.

Karl Urban (known for his role in the latter two instalments of The Lord of the Rings) takes the helmet from Stallone, and joining him in the grim streets of Mega City One is Olivia Thirlby (known for her role in Juno) as Judge Anderson. The two team up against the criminal queen Madeline ‘Ma-Ma’ Madrigal (played by Lena Headey, known for her roles in 300 and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) and her army of thugs.

Hopefully this will be an intriguing, dark superhero movie that can stand up to the ‘big cheeses’ of 2012 (Avengers Assemble and The Dark Knight Rises) and offer a strong character outside of the bigger companies of Marvel and DC.

Whilst Prometheus, Avengers Assemble and The Dark Knight Rises (out July 20th) dominate the summer film market, perhaps we’ll see a trailer soon when their theatrical reign ends.

Dredd releases on September 7th, 2012.
