Jurassic Park 4 has a director, and what a promising choice of director it is too. Colin Trevorrow is new to the Hollywood circuit having directed the successful indie flick Safety Not Guaranteed last year proving that as a director he has some skill worth taking note of, which is what Universal seem to have done.

Let’s be honest, despite Spielberg’s best efforts with Jurassic Park: The Lost World and Joe Johnston’s Jurassic Park 3, they were both pretty poor. If there hadn’t been Jeff Goldblum in the second and Pterodactyls in the third, they would have probably been completely unwatchable (even the acting talents of William H Macy in Jurassic Park 3 couldn’t save it from complete disaster). It would seem Universal realised they needed to get someone with some a bit of indie cred (not unlike Marc Webb following 500 Days of Summer with The Amazing Spiderman) in to direct the next chapter of the Isla Nubla disaster story. Let’s all gives thanks though that Joe Johnston was never even on the radar. I mean, Captain America: The First Avenger was pretty good, but The Wolfman was unforgiveable.

Various rumours circulated for years that Spielberg would return to direct the fourth instalment to redeem himself after The Lost World, and thus save the franchise from continuous disappointment. However, despite his involvement as executive producer for Jurassic Park 4, the promise of him directing became too speculative to be true. The rumours faded and film fans all over the world felt that horrible stab of disappointment that the dinosaur filled fourth film could well be put in the hands of someone who would send it straight to the bottom of the 2014 pile.

But behold, Colin Trevorrow is our saving grace and has cemented some promise back into what Jurassic Park 4 may entail. With Spielberg’s backseat involvement and writers of Rise of the Planet of the Apes on board as well, it would seem we have a recipe for success brewing here. Will Sam Neil return? What about Jeff Goldblum? One thing we can be sure of is that some expendable characters will succumb to some bone crunching deaths, and we can’t wait!

Jurassic Park 4 will be released  on June 13th, 2014 through Universal Pictures.
