Finally, everyone can stop talking about Drive. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fantastic film. It’s getting awfully close to being overhyped, though. Even 18 months on from it’s release. So much so, that Refn and Gosling’s follow-up, Only God Forgives, is now only mere months from general release. While it won’t be featuring in competition at Cannes (which Drive did), it will see a May release in France. This probably means a late Summer release in the UK (Drive was early September).

If this first red-band trailer is anything to go by, Refn could well do what Gozzy fangirls just won’t be able to handle, and top Drive. Visually, Only God Forgives already looks to be of the distinguished Refn style, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t look Kubrickian, even. No easy feat, and not the most common thing you’ll ever hear me say about a modern director. There are certainly elements of Eyes Wide Shut and A Clockwork Orange on display in the trailer; Kristen Scott-Thomas shrouded in blacks and reds, and all Gosling needs is one line to break the barrier between the viewer and his intense gaze.

Wanna fight?

Indeed.
