Acclaimed director Peter Jackson of “Lord of the Rings” fame is in negotiations to helm “The Hobbit” as director. After previous director Guillermo del Toro left the project due to scheduling conflicts as a result of MGM’s current financial trouble, Peter Jackson, originally on the project as producer has entered final talks with the studio to take the role of director in the prequel to the film trilogy based on the works of author J.R.R. Tolkien.

The story is still reported to be split into 2 films but no word on an official release date as yet been revealed.
