They’ve invaded your toy box, your board games, your video games and now the movie theatre. Warner Bros. has revealed a release date for Lego, the upcoming film based on the world-famous building brick toys, IGN reports. The project is to combine animation and live-action sequences, with Australian digital effects company Animal Logic working on the animation (whose previous works include Happy Feet and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole) and Phil Lord and Chris Miller (directors of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the recent film adaptation of 21 Jump Street) writing and directing. The film is set to release on February 28th, 2014.

With an abundance of fan-made stop-animation films created with Lego models available online (whether they are original works or parodying other existing media such as the Star Wars franchise), it will be interesting to see whether these shorts will influence the upcoming feature film. Creating a Lego themed film is certainly a creative idea, which could create a stunning visual spectacle if done well.

Phil Lord states that:

“It is the story of basically a young man who doesn’t have a creative bone in his body and [he] has to always build things from the instructions… he’s an ‘instructions worker.’ In the LEGO city, they build buildings, and it turns out in this universe it’s illegal to build apart from the instructions. So what he finds out is that he’s actually [a] descendant from these like super creative Jedi-type people who are called ‘Master Builders’ and he has been charged with saving the universe from being frozen together by an evil bad guy, so over the course of the movie he has to unlearn all of that lame-o, uncreative stuff and learn how to build without all of the instructions in order to save the universe.”

With Bratz dolls, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Battleship and now Lego with films under their belts, which toy will visit Hollywood next?
