Christopher Nolan has officially offered the lead role in his next sci-fi blockbuster, Interstellar, to undeniable man of the moment, Matthew McConaughey.

After a recent string of memorable performances in Killer Joe, Magic Mike and The Paperboy (not to mention his upcoming 2013 releases including Scorsese’s The Wolf Of Wall Street, Jeff Nichols’ Mud and his alarmingly thin turn in Dallas Buyers Club), it’s hardly surprising that Nolan has approached someone so ‘current’. He’s good at that.

From what we know so far, Interstellar is going to be Nolan’s first venture into outer space. With a script penned by the Nolan brothers, it will draw from the wormhole theories of Kip Thorne (CalTech astrophysics genius) and will no doubt be as exploratory as Nolan’s last original screenplay, Inception. Interestingly, it was always going to be written by Christopher’s brother, Jonah, but was originally meant to helmed by Steven Spielberg way back in 2006.

Whether or not McConaughey will accept is yet to be revealed, but honestly, why wouldn’t he?

An exciting prospect, and one that will hopefully concrete itself sooner rather than later.

Also, this is Nolan’s third film that begins with ‘IN’. Not sure why that’s relevant.

Interstellar will be released on November 7th, 2014 through Warner Brothers and Syncopy.
