Resident Evil Movie Reboot Nails Its New Writer, Director and Producer

The Resident Evil franchise is my all-time favourite in the gaming industry and while the videogame to movie cross-over has been a rather cursed transition, I’m always hoping that we fans will get the videogame based movie that we deserve, despite the Paul W.S Anderson movies somehow earning a total of $1.2 billion worldwide, with the final movie, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter grossing $312 million alone.  Either someone made a deal with the devil or found a magical genie in a bottle!

So when the first Resident Evil movie released in 2002, I had some quite high, yet deluded hopes.  As it turns out, as much as I wanted the movie to be good, it wasn’t and didn’t do the iconic franchise any justice in my opinion.  Then the five movies that followed didn’t get much better either and don’t even get me started on the contradictions between the ending of Resident Evil: Retribution and the story in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.

I’m not usually a fan of movie reboots, but in this case, if it means we’ll get no more Paul W.S Anderson Resident Evil movies, then I’m all for that change.  So with that said, as reported by Variety, the Resident Evil movie reboot has found its writer, director and producer.

Johannes Roberts will be writing and directing the Resident Evil reboot, to be honest, I don’t know much about the man, but we’ve all got to start from somewhere and hopefully he’ll be the one to give us the Resident Evil movie that we deserve.  Quite interesting if rumours are to be believed, this movie reboot will also be inspired by the fantastic Resident Evil 7, which was also a reboot in its own right.

Also, coming in as the producer will be James Wan, who has worked as a producer on the recent Aquaman movie, which is out in cinemas this month.  In terms of horror, James Wan has a fantastic pedigree, also being a producer for The Nun, the Annabelle movies, The Conjuring 2, Insidious: Chapter 3 and The Last Key, Lights Out and seven of the Saw movies.  So hopefully, this Resident Evil reboot might finally be in good hands.

Will this reboot break the Resident Evil movie curse?  Only time will tell, production is expected to begin sometime in 2019.
