Resident Evil movies to receive a reboot

Well it seems that Resident Evil: The Final Chapter wasn’t the final Resident Evil movie after all (excluding the CGI movies), but rather the word “Chapter” being the key word of notice here.

The German company Constantin Film’s that own the rights to the live-action Resident Evil movie franchise were speaking to Variety at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and Constantin Film’s chairman Martin Moszkowicz revealed that a reboot of the franchise is currently in the works.

I’ve often said the Resident Evil movies are my favourite “shit movies” and despite them being held in somewhat low regards in terms of movie quality, they have still remained a hit in terms of box office earnings, especially from outside the US.  For example the series has earned $1.2bn overall to date and The Final Chapter grossed $312m worldwide since its January 2017 release.  So in that respect, it makes sense from a financial standpoint to keep the movies alive and kicking.

From a fans perspective of both the videogames and the movies, I welcome this reboot, as let’s be honest, I think most of us would agree that the franchise deserves better and with a new director at the helm (director and husband of star Milla Jovovich; Paul W.S Anderson has directed four of six entries), wiping the slate clean with new actors/directors/producers could just be what the movie franchise needs.

Personally, I’d love the series to go in more of a serious direction and less tongue-in-cheek, perhaps taking influence from the likes of the fantastic Resident Evil 7.  I’m sure in the coming months, we’ll learn more of the franchise reboot and we’ll update you when we do.
