James Franco takes the lead, joined by Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), in the latest film included in the Planet of the Apes series, Rise of the Planet of the Apes. After months of anticipation and tease, fans were finally able to get a glimpse at the prequel today as the brand new trailer hit the web. Rise of the Planet of the Apes will tell the story of how a scientist (Franco) searching for a cure for Alzheimers via animal testing, deals with the rapid mutation within the Ape subjects.

Perhaps not the most exciting trailer I’ve seen this year, but one that I think has been engineered in a particularly interesting way. No major action scenes are featured, (despite on-set photos being leaked of the cast in rather action-packed positions), the music is relatively tame and really no major plot secrets are given away. The film, (which is fairly risky considering the Tim Burton 2001 remake completely underwhelmed fans and critics alike), stars Pinto in her first major starring role since Slumdog Millionaire (2008), and with Hollywood’s “renaissance man” Franco starring opposite, it’ll surely propell her straight back into Hollywood’s limelight. All in all, the trailer could be more thrilling whilst still remaining mysterious – hopefully a more exciting and extended trailer will follow in weeks to come.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is due to be released August 5th.
