The sequel to the 2006 Silent Hill film adaptation, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, has picked up a distributor and has a release date, IGN reports. Open Road Films (the studio of Lockout and The Grey) has announced that it will distribute the film in the USA, and is reportedly to be released there on October 26th 2012. There has been no confirmed UK release date as of yet. The film is directed by Solomon Kane director Michael J. Bassett.

The film is based upon Konami’s Silent Hill 3, revolving around Heather Mason (portrayed by Adelaide Clemens) who, being plagued by nightmares, on the cusp of her 18th birthday discovers that her identity may be false and that her father (portrayed by Sean Bean) has disappeared. The title’s namesake ‘revelation’ (surely a sub-title that’s been pandered around video-game related projects too much lately?) leads Heather to the infamous Silent Hill, in which cult members Claudia Wolf (played by The Matrix’s Carrie-Ann Moss) and Leonard Wolf (A Clockwork Orange’s Malcolm McDowell) maintain power over the strange town. Radha Mitchell and Deborah Kara Unger also reprise their roles as Rose Da Silva and Dahlia Gillespie. Heather also meets a man in the town, Vincent (played by Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington) who accompanies her on her journey.

Tom Ortenberg, CEO of Open Road Films, stated:

“Silent Hill has proven to be a powerhouse franchise. The fans have greeted each incarnation, including the original Silent Hill film, with great enthusiasm and we are confident that this latest project will be a strong addition to Open Road’s 2012 slate.”

Samuel Hadida, producer of the Silent Hill and Resident Evil film series, commented:

“The film is a thrill ride that improves on the original in many ways. We take all audiences, new and old, deep into the world of psychological horror that is Silent Hill, and advance thestory for those familiar with the franchise. We are thrilled to have Tom and his terrific team at Open Road presenting our film to U.S. audiences.”

2006’s Silent Hill is one of the better game-to-film adaptations out there, making use of the game’s original characters, monsters, story, music and camera angles and using them mostly effectively. One can hope that this fan-appeasing standard will not diminish for the sequel, and that the introduction of 3D will not cause the film to throw objects at the screen slow-mo its way through action sequences, as horror films Saw 3D and Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D have done in recent years, since the scares of Silent Hill are often best and at their most chilling when subtle rather than in-your-face. Here’s hoping that Silent Hill 3’s Robbie the Rabbit makes a creepy cameo.
