Well, well, well, haven’t Ubisoft been busy recently? Not only are they just preparing for the big upcoming releases like Far Cry 3, ZombiU and Rayman Legends (as well as having just released one of the most hotly anticipated games of the year, Assassin’s Creed III); and not only are they planning the Michael Fassbender produced-and-headlined Assassin’s Creed movie (which should be immensely awesome), but they’ve also got a little film in the works… some of you may have heard of the game it’s based on? Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell.

Variety reports that Ubisoft Motion Pictures have acquired the talents of none other than the incredibly cool Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, Bronson) to play the part of black-ops agent Sam Fisher. Eric Warren Singer (The International) will pen the screenplay. A studio has yet to be finalized, although there have been talks with studio giants Warner Bros. and Paramount.

The CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, Jean-Julien Baronnet, commented:

“Tom Hardy is currently one of the biggest talents in the film industry, and he has a phenomenal ability to take on complex and varied roles with his broad range of acting skills… his involvement in the ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell’ movie is exciting news for movie and video game fans alike. Meanwhile, Eric Singer is one of the most talented writers of the moment, and… we’re confident he’ll bring a fresh approach and create a thrilling story… while still respecting all the codes and traditions of the franchise that are so important to fans.”

Hardy definitely has the acting talent and muscle to take on this kind of action role. Let’s hope that Ubisoft can provide great entertainment with Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell, because so far only the reasonably decent Silent Hill has delivered as far as movie adaptations of video games go. And we’re still holding out on Takashi Miike’s adaptation of Capcom’s Ace Attorney, which has yet to announce a release date in the UK. One day, there will surely be a fantastic video game movie. Will Ubisoft be the first studio to take that crown?

Until the movie comes to fruition, you can whet your appetite with next spring’s highly anticipated title Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist.
