Sony Will Skip E3 2019 as Rumours Spark for PS5 2020 Release

This year Sony already decided to give their very own show, the PlayStation Experience a miss, which caught some by surprise.  However now, Sony has also decided that they will not be attending E3 next year in 2019.  With the likes of Microsoft and EA essentially hosting their own E3 shows, and now Sony looks to skip gaming’s biggest yearly convention, it’s another big blow for E3.

Here’s what Sony said in a statement (thanks Kotaku):

“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community,” said Sony. “PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”

In truth, with Sony expecting to release three big exclusives next year with no confirmed release dates, such as The Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima and Death Stranding (not including Days Gone as that has a release date), Sony might want to save their big three titles for when they host PSX next year.  But with all three games expecting to release late 2019, that wouldn’t fit into line with the PSX event taking place in December as it would be seemingly too late.  This as a result, has sparked rumours that Sony might very well host two PSX events next year, the first revealing more information on the aforementioned PS4 exclusives and the PSX that should take place in the usual December, might reveal the PS5.

To add fuel to the PS5 rumours, according to said rumours, PS5 console dev kits are already in the wild and as already heavily rumoured, the console is expected to release in 2020 and is said to feature PS4 backwards compatibility.  However, despite the Sony no-show at E3 2019, Microsoft and Nintendo will be at the event next year, as confirmed via the tweet from Phil Spencer below and Reggie Fils-Aime outlining the shows importance (thanks Eurogamer).

“E3 is an outstanding opportunity for us to share new games and experiences with fans and business partners from across the globe,” Said Reggie. “Every year, we discuss what will be the best way for us to take advantage of the next E3 show in order to bring smiles to people’s faces.”
