A new trailer for Disney’s The Lone Ranger started circulating earlier today and I think it’s fair to say fans of Pirates of The Caribbean and Johnny Depp will be dribbling for the duration.

It certainly looks like a lot of fun, and with Gore Verbinski and Jerry Bruckheimer at the helm it’s sure to be an action packed spectacle. Armie Hammer is our man of law turned masked vigilante as he takes on the role of John Reid whose story is told to us by Tonto (Depp) a Native American warrior. The trailer doesn’t give much away about the films plot, which seems to be potentially quite un-imaginative, there are so many clichés littering the trailer it just seems as though the characters of Toto and Reid are going to be the main things to carry the film itself. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, Depp doesn’t need to prove himself anymore as a reputable actor and roles like this are pretty much made for him to have a bit of fun with. There’s nothing new here, the costume design for Depp is a less pirate-y version of Jack Sparrow, dreadlocks, face paint, bandanna, a silly strange accent and I’m certain the characterisation of him will be just as familiar.

Plus it would seem wherever Johnny Depp goes, a scraggly Helena Bonham-Carter won’t be far behind and here she is again, gothed up and speaking in a cockney accent. Yawn.  That aside, it looks entertaining and its clear to see already how this will be the next big franchise for Disney from the Pirates of the Caribbean team. I’m expecting some witty humour, banter, gunslingers and explosions with the addition of Johnny Depp doing what he does best and Armie Hammer becoming the valiant hero Orlando Bloom always wanted to be.

The Lone Ranger is set to be released in August 2013.
