#E32019 Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition coming this autumn

Good news for old school RTS fans, as the classic Age of Empires II is set to receive another remaster.

We already had the HD version from way back in 2013, which offered a visual upgrade, but to put it bluntly not much else.

This ‘definitive edition’, however, promises to take it up a notch, not just with the visuals – offering support up to 4K resolution – but also a host of new content and gameplay improvements.

They’re offering four new civilisations including the Bulgarians, Cumans, Lithuanians and Tatars; new campaign missions with The Last Khans; and spectator and tournament features for online multiplayer.

Visually, judging from the trailer, I suppose there’s not much to be done to improve drastically on such an old game, but the improvement is certainly noticeable – adding a bit more colour and texture to the environments and character models.

I’m more looking forward to the additional missions and civilisations – as they boast in their press release, the four new civilisations takes the number up to a grand 35 – and I’m sure for anyone who revisits the game from time to time, some new content is a big boon.

If you already own the HD version on steam (or have Xbox Game Pass for PC) then you will get a discounted price – it’s advertising in dollars at the moment, but I’m sure you can guestimate the eventual translation – from $19.00 to $14.99.

It’s nice to see there’s still love for this classic RTS, and it brings hope (perhaps vain) that they might do something with the original title? Regardless, there’s more life in Age of Empires yet, and the developers tease that there’s more info to come regarding the Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition as well as the long awaited Age of Empires IV.

For now though, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition should be releasing in autumn this year for PC.
