Battlefield 1 announced with trailer & WWI setting, screenshots & Collector’s Edition

Yesterday the latest Battlefield was revealed to the world and it seems that much of the rumours prior to the big announcement were true.  Going back to its World War roots, this Battlefield will have a World War I setting, but contrary to some of the rumours, it will not be an alternative history according to EA, apparently its straight up World War I.  This beginning has led to the slightly confusing name of Battlefield 1 (rather than Battlefield 5), so presumably, if the next game will have a World War II setting, will it be called Battlefield 2?  We’ll just have to wait and see on that one.

Yesterday the Battlefield 1 world reveal trailer was graced upon us and while it did not feature any direct gameplay footage, the trailer consisted of “in-game engine” footage.  Which basically means that while it does represent the visual capabilities and themes, the trailer is very scripted.  However, that has stopped the majority of the gaming community getting very excited, myself included.  Hopefully, we’ll get to see some direct campaign and multiplayer gameplay at this year’s E3 in June.

World War I was set between 1914 and 1918, and much of its war took place in the trenches.  So we can expect some intense trench warfare, however, Battlefield 1 will take us to various locations from across the globe which will help vary the gameplay.  We will visit locations such as France with “tight urban fights”, the “big open spaces” of the Italian Alps and “frantic combats” in the deserts of Arabia.  The campaign story will focus on various characters, rather than just the one main, but EA are currently keeping those details under-wraps at this time.

Battlefield 1 will have its class character system for multiplayer with Assault, Medic, Scout and Support and will feature vehicles on land, sea and air.  Vehicles in both the campaign and online will include light and heavy tanks, battleships, fighter plane dogfights, bomber planes and horses.  Weapon-wise we can expect bayonets, flamethrowers, pistols, shotguns, rifles, SMG’s, swords, clubs and more.  Some of the weapons will also be customisable.  And of course it will feature up-to 64-player multiplayer.

Battlefield 1 will release on October 21st for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.  However, if you subscribe to EA Access, you will be able to play the game five days early on October 16th with its free trial system and subbing to EA Access will grant you a 10% discount on a digital purchase via Xbox Marketplace and Origin.  Just a heads up, websites such as CDKeys tend to have great offers on EA Access and I have bought monthly passes for less than £1.50, so it will be worth keeping an eye out for offers to sample Battlefield 1 before its released to the big wide world.

There will also be several editions available at release with the standard, Early Enlister Deluxe Edition and the Collector’s Edition.  Also, as reported yesterday, pre-ordering Battlefield 1 will gift you with the Hellfighter Pack which features the Harlem Hellfighter infantry regiment.

If you pick up the Early Enlister Deluxe Edition you will be granted with the Red Barron and the Lawrence of Arabia Packs, which contain special themed weapons, vehicles and various other items.  It will also include five Battlepacks, which also allows you to change the visual appearance of three of the largest vehicles in the game, though details are limited at this time.  Arguably the biggest appeal of picking up this edition, is that it will give you access to Battlefield 1 three days early starting from October 18th.

If you’re feeling a little extra flush with cash, you can pick up the Battlefield 1 Collector’s Edition at £179.99/$219.99.  We’re not sure if this edition includes the Red Barron and Lawrence of Arabia Packs or the three-day early access at this time, but we certainly hope that it will, considering the price.

Below are details on what this Collector’s Edition includes:

  • 14″ Collector’s Edition Statue
  • Exclusive Steelbook
  • Exclusive Cloth Propaganda Poster
  • Deck of Playing Cards
  • Messenger Pigeon Tub with Exclusive DLC Content
  • Exclusive Patch
  • Premium Packaging
