At this years E3, Bethesda decided to show an impressive demo for survival horror master, Shinji Mikami‘s new game, The Evil Within. Bethesda had spoken to quite a number of press members to showcase the same demo and talk about what features stood out in it.

Capture

The demo began with our hero, Sebastian, who is a detective that gets captured while he is hot on a trail of some grizzly murders. And so, we see our hero, who is now bound and hung upside down among other bodies. He is in a slaughter house, that has blood dripping from every corner with the light faintly piercing through the somewhat worn windows. The bodies, sway around him as he notices a knife stuck in one of them, and so, he decides to swing towards it in hopes of catching it. After a few unsuccessful tries, he finally grabs it and successfully manages to cut himself down. However, the danger is far from over as a gigantic, and scary looking butcher is standing right in front of him, chopping up the bodies into pieces. It was probably lucky that he cut himself down in time, as he knew what fate was waiting for him if he hadn’t.

So now, the most impressive thing probably happens, and he crouches down, CROUCHES DOWN! Which is a huge thing for a horror survival game! He decides to sneak out towards the door on the far-end at the left, but unfortunately discovers it to be locked. So, he decides to head on back where he came from, to find the key for the door, and what do you know? He actually finds it, but there’s a catch, and with survival horror, there is always a catch. The key is hanging on a hook right in front of where the butcher is standing. So, Sebastian decides to wait it out, and the first moment he gets when the butcher is away, decides to swipe the key without him noticing it.

So now, with the key to the door in his hands, he unlocks the door and finds himself in a rather long corridor, thinking he is safe for now. However when he starts walking too casually, he unknowingly sets an alarm off, a noisy one that screams out with flashing red lights. Then to his horror, behind him stands the behemoth with a chainsaw, ready to shred him into two pieces. He gives chase to the detective, who starts to run away in hopes of escaping with his life intact, but unfortunately, he is too slow for the monster, and thus meets the wrong end of the chainsaw and is helplessly picked up with it. As the chainsaw slowly, but surely, painfully cuts him into two, we realize that this is not going to be a walk in the park.

This little experience reminded us of a very important thing, that it is wise to be always cautious in this place, as the most horrible of things can be lurking right around the corner without you even knowing. Also, the reason I emphasized that he “crouches down” is because, it is refreshing to see stealth work so well in a survival horror game, where you actually have to be cautious at times, knowing that there are some things you just can’t kill. However, the most impressive thing about the demo was the beautiful lightning that really helped create the ambiance. We even had cloth particles swaying around from the wind, they were torn up and beautifully detailed.

After seeing this brief, but impressive demo, I really can’t wait for this game as it seems to be doing exactly what a horror fan would want. It really emphasizes on the fact that this is, first of all, “survival” horror. The game was also confirmed to be coming out for the PS4, which is not much of a surprise actually, but is a great one anyways. Be sure to check out this amazing game, especially if you are horror fan when it comes out to on the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One next year!
