After a very long period of awkward silence, Bethesda has finally provided us with an update regarding Prey 2’s development. The hugely promising shooter showed very well at last year’s E3, but after rumours of a possible cancellation, things seemed uncertain for the title. In case you missed the title’s debut, the cinematic trailer and gameplay walkthrough (G4TV) are available on YouTube.

I hope that I wasn’t the only one loosing sleep over this, as the futuristic shooter set in an open-world inspired by Blade Runner certainly had huge potential, and add to that how much I enjoyed the original Prey, I certainly hoped for the best.

Bethesda’s update details their feelings regarding the title not living up to their quality standards, and assures fans that it will be worth the wait. This does come at the expense of a delay however, as the title will not be released this year as originally announced.

Bethesda’s update is as follows –

Development of Prey 2 has not been cancelled but the game will not be released in 2012 as planned. The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards. Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans. We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want. We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.

While it is unknown if Prey 2 will make an appearance at E3 2012, hopefully there will be more information on the title soon.
