Capcom have been busy at PAX East today. One of their biggest announcements for a certain type of fan is the partnership with Iron Galaxy to rerelease the long lost Dungeons and Dragons games, D&D: Tower Of Doom and D&D: Shadow Over Mystara, to a brand new audience.

Dungeons_-_Dragons-SOM-feat

These games are part of Capcom’s essential repertoire of detailed and complex beat-em-ups, second only to the likes of Alien Vs Predator and Sega’s Guardian Heroes. Offering a wide range of attack options, from melee to ranged combat, both games offer a satisfying and nuanced sidescrolling experience. Staying true to the Dungeons And Dragons name, there are RPG elements at play, with magic to wield and the standard range of tabletop character tropes available to play as.

These games have been hard to find for a long time, with their only official console conversion being a Japanese exclusive to the Sega Saturn. It’s also not exactly a perfect conversion, so while this is a niche release, those that know of it have been bellowing for a long time in a vain attempt to get these gems noticed. It seems likely that we hadn’t seen them before due to licensing issues. On which note, do Capcom have the D&D license back? Is that PS4 demo…? Nevermind, I’m sure we’ll find out in due course.

In other delightful news on this project, Iron Galaxy are at the helm, an experienced and accomplished convertor of Capcom’s arcade ouput. With Darkstalkers, 3rd Strike and Final Fight under their belts, you can be sure the finished package will come with a veneer of polish. GGPO online play, a House Rules mode where you can modify a vast array of gameplay options, and challenges to earn unlocks from the Vault (likely artwork and the like) highlight that once again, this is not just a lazy port.

D&D: Chronicles Of Mystara is due in June for Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Wii U for £11.99. Watch the official trailer below.
