UK game developer Stainless Games, best known for producing the multimillion-selling Carmageddon, have now announced that they are working on a brand new game in the vehicular combat series, fittingly titled Carmageddon: Reincarnation.

CEO and co-founder of Stainless Games, Patrick Buckland, noted that the studio is very excited to bring back the notorious game of the 90’s to a 21st century audience:

“Carmageddon has returned to its indie developer roots, and the time is right to bring the game to a new audience,”

“Originally an ambitious title that tested the hardware limits of its day, we’re excited that the game will finally get the showcase it deserves on today’s platforms.”

Fellow founder of Stainless Games, Neil Barden, said:

“Carmageddon: Reincarnation will feature the same black humour and comic violence that made the original game such a success.”

“All the laughs, the crazy power-ups, and extreme destruction will return. We will make sure the existing fans get what they want and expect from a Carmageddon game, and a new generation discovers the delights of sliding into a Cunning Stunt.”

The original game, released in 1997, sparked controversy after the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) refused to certify the game, due to its extreme violent nature and gore. But after ten months of appeal, the BBFC caved in and certified the original version. However, the game was banned completely on other countries, including Brazil. This controversy led to more popularity around the title, which led to becoming a trilogy, with sequels Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now and Carmageddon TDR 2000.

At this moment in time, the studio is actively seeking a partner to move the project onto full production, after receiving full intellectual property rights from Square-Enix, who will not be involved in Carmageddon: Reincarnation. Also, no platforms have been announced just yet, therefore it’s safe to say that the game is in the very early stages of development.

Carmageddon: Reincarnation will be a downloadable title looking at a release in 2012.
