SEGA have officially announced the return of Castle Of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, which is billed as a HD re-imagining of the Mega Drive classic.

Due to hit PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 this summer, the project has been headed up by Sega Studios Australia, a studio soon to be dissolved. Hopefully, this will be a fond farewell for them. Also working closely with Disney Interactive, some of the original players in the 1990 game are said to be involved to make sure the spirit of the original stays strong. SEGA are promising some new mechanics in the mix based on plans that were never completed for the Mega Drive.

The screenshots look sumptuous and bring back vivid memories of the bright, colourful worlds that made Castle Of Illusion a delight to traverse. Hopefully the music will also stay as strong as it was.

The original game comes from the heyday of Disney games, where SEGA and Capcom made brilliant platformer after brilliant platformer for the eight and 16-bit eras. Mickey butt-stomped his way through a forest, a toy-box and many other well-realised environments in the illusory castle of Mizrabel (miserable, get it) who has Minnie captive. This reboot has a lot to live up to, so it better be up to the task.
