So it’s that time of year again, people are putting up decorations, running around buying presents. All the while, Crytek are thinking up new ways to make your PC melt in to a little puddle.

Crysis 2 met with a little bit of, shall we say, stayed aggression from the PC community initially when it was released in April 2011. The first game was, for a very long time, a benchmark for your PC. The second game however was released only running in DX9, much to the dismay of many people who were hoping for a new line in the sand.

A few months later, Crytek released a DX11 high-def pack. This cranked up a few settings including an obscene amount of tessellation effects. Alongside that there was also the inclusion of HDR motion blur, parallax occlusion mapping and not forgetting, the high-res textures pack.

This was Crytek’s attempt to calm the nerves of the PC master race. To an extent I think it worked, there was still screams that the game had a severe case of “consolitis” but that’s another conversation.

I think we can agree though, that the new hi-performance specs are genuinely what it says on the tin. Needing a i7-2600K/AMD Bulldozer FX4150, 8GB RAM and a GTX680/AMD Radeon HD7970 is going to mean people may have to ask for new hardware this Christmas. Having said that, the recommended and minimum specs are fairly modest and should allow a great many gamers to play, that is, as long as they don’t mind notching down all the pretty lights. I am sure that won’t stop any of the usual arguments on the Steam forums, revolving around people not getting the performance they expect, but those kinds of threads on the other hand, are always expected.

Thankfully I am in the comfortable position of having a PC that exceeds even the hi-performance specs, but whether I enjoy Crysis 3 will remain largely based on whether they make it more like a big sprawling playground, as with the first game, and less like a corridor shooter, as was my main complaint with Crysis 2. I have my fingers crossed anyway.

So who will be asking for their Christmas sock to be filled with shiny new PC hardware? Or will you make do with what you have? Graphics aren’t everything… right?
