The Dead Space franchise is one of the best horror games of its genre. Well, at least the first two mainline games are.

When Visceral Games released the first Dead Space in 2008 under Electronic Arts, it instantly became a cult classic and a horror game that could genuinely rival Capcom’s Resident Evil series.

Then in 2011, we were treated to its first sequel and while there was more of an emphasis on action, it certainly had its fair share of horror, blending the two elements to near perfection. Unfortunately in 2013, we had Dead Space 3 and it would be Visceral Games’ last entry in the series.

Presumably pushed in an action direction with a co-op campaign by EA, Dead Space 3 all but lacked the intense horror that won the hearts of fans with the first two games. Objectively, Dead Space 3 was a decent action game, but it truly lost its original identity.

Earlier this year we were treated to the Dead Space remake, a game that was built from the ground up that finally revived this beloved series and it’s fair to say that we will be getting the next game remade, possibly even the third entry. That being said, if we were to get a Dead Space 3 remake, it would be interesting to see whether it will have the same direction as the 2013 game.

When talking on the CaptainBribo podcast, writer and co-producer of Dead Space 3, Chuck Beaver said he would “redo” the game “almost completely” if given the opportunity with the story focusing on a “broken Isaac”.

“Now, in this [Dead Space] remake territory, I would redo Dead Space 3 almost completely, but I would keep the lore beat it’s predicated on, keep the lore you find out, and I would have Ellie there but in a different relationship [with Isaac Clarke] and redo the entire main story.”

Chuck Beaver elaborated further as to why he believed Dead Space 3 was a flop. “The plan was that we’d expand into other gameplay genres. All those bits together not only didn’t generate a new audience, they lost the old audience,” he explained. “We weren’t allowed to make a horror game from the beginning.”

In my review of the Dead Space remake for GameByte, I said it’s: “just about as perfect of a remake as we could ask for. It runs with the old saying “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” formula, but the developers at Motive Studio add some subtle improvements and quality-of-life updates to justify the existence of this remake.”

Dead Space is out now on PC, PlayStation and Xbox Series X|S. It is also available to subscribers of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and EA Play.
