Defense Grid 2, sequel to 2008’s well received tower defence game, has now become available for pre-order on Steam. The news comes with the additional announcement of pre-order ‘incentives’. Everyone who pre-orders the game will receive a 10% discount, as well as access (effective immediately) to the game’s beta (only available for Windows).

Interestingly, there is also a ‘reward’ scheme in place, whereby after reaching a certain number of pre-orders a ‘reward’ will be unlocked and included with your purchase. There are three tiers of rewards, the first unlocking an expansion to the original game (Defense Grid: Containment), as well as a digital copy of the original game’s art book.

The second tier unlocks the original game (no, I didn’t muddle up my paragraphs, they are genuinely offering the expansion before the original game), as well as 50% off the Early Access, social sandbox game Windborne.

And finally, the third tier will unlock A Matter of Endurance, which is an original audio story.

If you are not a fan of pre-ordering (I don’t blame you), then the special edition will include all of the aforementioned tiers, as well as a digital art book for the game, and the e-book The Making of Defense Grid 2: The Complete Story Behind the Game by Russ Pitts.

If you are not familiar with the Defense Grid series, they are essentially tower defence games – the original tasking you with defending ‘power cores’ from waves of enemies by the strategic positioning of towers, each tower with its own unique attributes/abilities. As you kill enemies you gain resources, which can be spent on more towers or upgrading your existing ones.

Defense Grid 2 is described by a press release as follows:

“Defense Grid 2 (DG2) features stunning landscapes as players fight for the survival of human civilization. With single-player, co-op and competitive multiplayer modes in levels that change dynamically, DG2 offers endless ways to tap into resources and build towers in order to defend against waves of incoming enemies.”

The game is scheduled for a September release.
